The most important of these was 11 Herman Sachtleren, or Zaftleven (1609-1685), the cha- racter of whose landscapes is generally taken from the romantic banks of the Rhine. A peculiarly soft mist hangs over the scenery, the handling is of the highest finish, but the execution is not always free from mannerism.
