" "It is great, " he said, "because of the fact that it was delivered by one whose whole life was completely consistent with the spirit of sacrificial dedication to the cause of freedom that permeates the address. And it is with that spirit of sacrificial dedication in mind that I want to share with you what has come to be a deep-seated concern — a concern that we in our day will make the maximum possible contribution to a 'new birth of free- dom. ' And right at the outset, I want to say that I believe that you and I will make that contribution only if we are truly thankful for freedom — thankful for the heritage that has been left to us by Abraham Lincoln.
