To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

Want free lumber and want it badly. We need it in our busi- ness; we need it in our homes; we need it to save our forests and streams. There is plenty of lumber in Canada and the lumbermen there are anxious to do business with us. The present tariff laws for- bid, except at prices that increase the cost of lumber from 10 to 20 per cent. This cost is added to the cost of our houses, mills, stores and furniture. Since the passage of the Dingley bill, in 1897, the prices of lumber have gone up nea...rly 100 per cent. , according to Bradstreets. While it is true that the duty on sawed lumber is only about $2 per thousand, it is also true that this duty is all effective in New England and that it increases the cost of lumber there by fully $2 per thousand.
The estimated value of the buildings annually constructed in Massachusetts is $180, 000, 000. Estimating that the duties on lum- ber and other building materials increase the cost of building 15 per cent. , the tariff tax on our buildings amounts to $27, 000, 000 a year, or over $40 a family.
