For I^uther, justification by faith was a doctrine of such overwhelming importance that he quite neglected to note the process by which man had been educated up to the point where justification by faith was possible. This one doctrine was, for him, the everlasting expression of the attitude of God toward men. The doc- trine of predestination represented Cal- vin's conception of the relation between God and men, — a timeless and eternal relation which has existed in all ages. 131 ALEXANDER CAMPB...ELL'S THEOLOGY Both IvUther and Calvin read their cen- tral doctrines into the Old Testament by any method of exegesis which the neces- sities of the case seemed to demand. Since there were no Jewish Christians then, as there had been in the second century, they could take what they wanted from the Old Testament and there was no one to raise embarrassing questions about the perpetuity of the ritual law.
The first deliberate recognition of the truth that God has dealt with men differ- ently at different times, and that He can give a command for a limited time with- out compromising the eternity of His nature, is found in the work of Hype- rius, Olevianus and Raphael Eglin, all sixteenth century Calvinists of strict type.
