Under the mysterious dispensations of an all-wise Providence we as individuals and as an organized body are annually arrested in the course of our benevolent pursuits and required to pause, at lea...st mo- mentarily, and made to realize in grief and sadness the vanity of all worldly things, the instability of wealth and power, the certain de- cay of all earthly greatness, and the frailness of our hold upon hu- man life Since our last annual meeting a great leader has fallen. A majestic and towering form, which was wont to move among us, and upon which we were accustomed to gaze with feelings of pride, re- spect, admiration, and affection, has disappeared, and the places which knew him so well know him no more.
