Beyond this was the Rio Limpo, forming, with its pure stream running over its pebbly bed, a strong contrast to the red mud river we had passed ; and having crossed it at a wide and shallow ford, we arrived at S. Joao d'el Rey.
This celebrated city, the capital of the co- marca of Rio das Mortes, was built about the same time as S. Jose, and was another specu- lation of the gold-searchers in this country.
