Among these compositions we find fantasias, which consisted of different motives following one another in imitation and fugal style, pavanes, galliards, and variations on folk 140 THE EVOLUTION OF PIANO MUSIC. Melodies. The first collection of virginal mu- sic published in England was that known as the " Parthenia, " which appeared in 1611. The music was written by Byrd, Bull, Orlando Gib- bons, and others. It consisted of twenty-one pieces, printed on six-line staves. These p...ieces were preludes, pavanes, galliards, one fantasia in four parts, and the " Queen's Command, " by Gibbons, which was an air and variations. These Englishmen were great players and com- posers in their time, but they accomplished lit- tle or nothing in the development of our extant form and technique. It is safe to say that the achievements of the French school deserve more careful consideration, though, as we shall presently see, the development of piano music and piano playing passed from Italy to Ger- many in the first half of the eighteenth century, and was continued by the great Teutonic mas- ters down to our time.
