These critics are in error when they speak of agriculture as an independent science, and propose to formulate the instruction in it as they would that in chemistry or in biology. The fact is, agriculture is not a science but an art, and what we are attempting to do in these colleges is to carry out the injunction of the act of congress of 1862 and "teach the sciences (chemistry, physics, geology, biology, vegetable physiology, etc. , each including numer- ous branches), related thereto.
