Essays and Studies, p. 194- When Sallust, Livy, or Tacitus, under influence of vivid description, igno...res tense and person, and uses the so-called historical infinitive, the translator should endeavor to convey into English the excitement and confusion of the original ; for example, Interea Cati- lina in prima acie versari, laborantibus succurrere, THE WORK OF THE TRANSLATOR. 33 (Sallust, Catiline, 60, 4), " Catiline meantime bustling round in the forefront of battle, helping them that were sore bestead " (Lane).
A word of caution is needed in reproducing such a simple style as that of Homer.
