What reading level is The book of M book?
To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

“Max?” he called hoarsely. He crawled out from the rubble in the building across from their old home, where he’d hidden himself overnight. “Max?”
It wasn’t Max. He caught sight of a foot as its owner rounded the corner away from him at a sprint. There had been no shadow attached, but it had been a man’s foot, not a woman’s. Then another shadowless ran past, at such speed he again caught almost no details—just whipping legs, a low crouch, and fading echoes.
Ory waited until it was quiet again and
... then crept into the street. What was that about? he wondered. Busy areas never meant anything good anymore. But the question was whether they were running to something—or from it. He edged around the corner and into the wreckage of the intersection to see if he could find where they’d gone.
“Don’t move!” someone shouted. Ory scrambled, grabbing for a gun he no longer had. A dark man in army fatigues and a bike helmet jerked into a dodge, as if expecting him to throw a blade, and then aimed a shotgun of his own at Ory.

Wow! I don't ever give much thought to the titles of the books I read because the story is what's important. I'm glad I stuck with that because I enjoyed the surprise towards the end. The Red King's identity was not a surprise but there were enough surprises to keep me interested. Thumbs up

The story was quite hard to understand but everything is revealed at the end. The ending was really... how do you explain... unique, unexpected and bittersweet. It has so many plot twists that will bring you to tears one second and sigh in relief the next. I recommend this to people who have quite some time in their hands and have a good memory as you'll have to remember a lot of information for the next page to make sense ( in other words, don't lose your shadow ;D).

Absolutely amazing story. It is so well thought out and absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful. Shepherd has brought so much life to these characters, and has left me in tears for every last page.

this book is great. i was sucked in from the start. i couldn’t put it down, sometimes it was so intense i had to take a break. i did not see the ending coming at all. i was shocked, but it was a great story, with a great ending. i can’t wait for the next one !!

i mean it was long and slow and interesting i guess if your a patient type thats okay with a million plot holes then you do you but if you want adventure fast and quick then honestly don't waste your time.

Oh my goodness!! Keep tissues handy and do not read at work where your make up will be ruined! What a read!! I really hope there will be a second book.

Sad yet satisfying....
Towards the end it seemed that the amount of Shadowless and Shadowed became somewhat constant. The ending was a surprise but not unexpected. It is the type of book that you wish would have a sequel but if it did, would it be just as engaging?
I don't think that everything needed to be resolved at the end of this book. The most important thing, the protagonist's problem was resolved. The rest is just food for the mind of any very imaginative reader.

I really enjoyed this book for it's uniqueness. It was an action-packed page turner set in a fantastical universe. However, there are not many light- hearted moments. If you enjoy post apocalyptic-horror type novels, such as the Hunger Games then you will probably love this book. It's a really interesting concept. One of the things that make this book unique is that all the leading characters are minorities: Eastern Asian, Black, Middle Eastern, and married homosexual males.
The book however has so many minor characters that aren't well developed that it can be confusing to keep up with. My two main criticisms of the book would be that in general the characterization is not well defined, and that the book doesn't have a fluid style of readability. Much as left up to the reader guessing at the meaning of things. However, while reading the book I could easily visualize many of grand moments being translated to the big screen.-- The book does seem like a whole lot of content, which in the end all turned out to be pointless and unnecessary, but I think that was the intent of the author. Many things are. Towards the end of the book, I began to feel so nervous as I began to realize what was about to happen, and correctly predicted the ending- and it still had me shook. Over all, not the best book I've ever read, but still more riveting than most. I would definitely recommend.

Your book is a gift:of heart, mind and soul. Of words that inspire, engender a curious hopeful wonder. Full of possibility, of people I will not forget... anytime soon I hope .
