^*o:i '' On 31 On the subject of the second objection there is occasion
... to speak at some length. It is not to be imagined that the density of the Earth or other planet does not much exceed the density of the fluid by which they are severally surrounded, and however the force of the Sun's attraction is weakened by distance, it continues to act in pro- portion to density. The hypothesis of progres- sive motion being communicated to the planets by projectile impulse, which combining with the attraction of the Sun causes the planets to revolve in a circular orbit round the Sun, supposes a medium so rare as not to offer a sensible resist- ance, nor to occasion a sensible diminution of the force of the original impulse given.
