" This story may be true. At the third debate, held at Jonesboro, a strongly Democratic locality, where only about 2000 people were present, Lincoln pressed Douglas hard on the answer to the Freeport questions. He insisted that Douglas must explain how in the light of the Dred Scott decision the people of a territory could control the introduction of slavery. Douglas' reply was ingenious, but it was not satisfactory. It turned the South against him.
