Last midnight in the darkness I woke from visions sweet, And heard upon my threshold The tramp of thronging feet.
There came in long procession All shoon I ever wore The stalwart boot of manhood The tiny shoe of yore.
Downtrodden, torn, neglected, Laden with dust and grime, Each bore, spite age and wrinkle, The spirit of its prime.

And some ah ! there were many Went pacing to and fro ; Their lonely shadows darkened O'er years of doubt and woe.
A few I scarcely knew them They were not shoon of yore With footsteps small and timid They tottered o'er the floor.
