A dry salted calfskin was trimmed and split along the back- bone. It was intended to carry a half -skin through the experi- ment as one piece but the apparatus for volume measu
...rements was found to be too small so it was split into two pieces. The figures for the two pieces have been added together so that the result is reported as if it had been kept as one piece. Measure- ments are reported on volume, weight, area and density through- out the tanning process. These pieces were soaked for 24 hours in water, the latter being changed after 12 hours. The lime used was made by dissolving 5 grams of dry hydrated lime in 400 cc. Of water. The pieces were placed in this solution for ten days.
