However difficult it may be to determine with prccifion, when two or more words were firft combined together, and applied in a particular fenfe, there can be no doubt that many Inch combinations prevail and are familiar in one •jge, which in a former were entirely unknown. It is impoffiblc to read a page of the Poems, with- out obfcrving a number of phrafcs, which, when divcfted of their hard words and uncouth fpelling, are plainly modern, and of which no examples can be produced from any writer of the XVth century.
