It is generally agreed, that in its primary application this passage related to the birth of a child within a few years from the publication of the prophecy. Bishop Lowth re- marks, that, though " not excluding a higher secondary sense, the obvious and literal meaning of the prophecy is this ; that within the time that a young woman, now a vir- gin, should conceive and bring forth a child, and that child should arrive at such an age as to distinguish between good and evil, that is, within a few years, (compare ch.
