Everywhere else the gritty and shaly facies is dominant. The names applied to the principal sub- divisions are largely taken from the Shropshire district, conse- quently in most parts of the country they are entirely inapplicable.

As already mentioned, they have not yet been properly demarcated from the Ordovician in central Wales. Two distinct classifications of the strata are in general use, as shown side by side in the following table: Downton and Lcdbury beds \ Downtonian sericg .

Wenlock series J Tarannon Slates j Valentian series.

The classical district for the Silurian succession is in Shrop- shire, in the country between Much Wenlock and Ludlow.
