...n aluminium-copper alloy. He mixes copper, or oxidized copper, or cupric oxide, in the finest possible state, with fine, powdered, pure alumina and charcoal, preferably animal charcoal. The alumina and copper or copper oxide are mixed in equivalent proportions, but an excess of charcoal is used. The mixture is put in a crucible such as is used for melting east steel, which is lined inside with charcoal. The charge is covered with char- coal, and the crucible subjected first to a tempera- ture near the melting point of copper, until the alumina is reduced, and then the heat is raised high enough to melt down the alloy.
