A night or two before the benefit I called on John Hollingshead to run through the above. I was not Before I Forget quite certain about some of the people mentioned whether my memory served me faithfully as to their connection with the Gaiety. I was alone with Hollingshead for an hour or so. It did not dawn on me until I began to read, how a simple record of his triumphs, and his failures, would appeal to the person immediately concerned. Practical John showed me how deep-rooted is the sentiment springing from associations, in which a man has put his whole heart, and brain, and energies.
