To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

) This is a leather safe, trilobular in shape, about 6^ inches wide and 5 inches long. To the foi-ward lobe is attached a strap of 9^ to 10| ounce bridle leather. \\ inches wide by 12 inches long, which connects the carrier to the girth by means of the buckle in the center 22 of the girth. To each side k)be of the carrier strap is attached by a leather chape a l]-iiich nuiHeable-iron roller buckle, bronzed, the leather cliape carrying a standing loop. These buckles serve as means of attaching t...he depending billets of the saber carrier and rifle car- rier boot, or special picket pin carrier.
The purpose of this article is to retain the rifle boot, or special locket pin carrier, as the case may be, and the saber carrier snugly against the flanks of the horse, thus avoiding all flapping, swinging, and unnecessary motion of whatever kind. It should be draw^n suffi- cientl, y snug to accurately accomi)lisli this purpose and no more. It serves in no sense as a rear girth — the saddle needs no rear girth — and it should not be employed for any such purpose.
