His only official connexion with Oxford was his Studentship at Christ Church, and Christ Church he henceforth used chiefly as a place of quiet study, where he could work at Dr. Pusey's Life more uninterruptedly than at Amen Court. It was, perhaps, with the view of marking a change in his relations with the Univer- sity that, in 1879, he published his second and last Series of University Sermons. They range from 1869 to 1878 ; and the latest in date might, if comparisons in such matters were pos...sible, be considered the greatest sermon that he ever delivered. It is called "Worth of Faith in a Life to Come. " It was preached on November loth, 1878: it dealt with the majestic theme of life continuous through and after death; and it had special reference to the recent de- parture of a peculiarly bright and saintly spirit. 1 The sermon ended thus : " Suffer me to add in conclusion a few words which may be remem- bered in years to come. The expectation of a life after death enables us to see things in their true proportions.
