He came to visit the English Quaker churches, and in the course of his travels went to Norfolk, where he was to be the guest of an ancient and honourable family of Quaker bankers Gurney by name. On the appointed day Mr. Gurney drove to the station to meet the stranger, desiring to show him all attention and courtesy. It was a winter's day, and " the way was long and the wind was cold, " especially as the host stood on the platform awaiting the incoming train. When it came, friend Gurney quickly... recognised his visitor, and, approaching him, said he would take him to the carriage, which was waiting, when the following conversation ensued : Visitor: " I prefer to walk. " Host: " But it is three miles from here, and the roads are wet and muddy. " Visitor : " I prefer to walk. " 44 ENGLISH NOTES Host : " But they will be waiting dinner. " Visitor : ft I prefer to walk. " So, poor Mr. Gurney, looking down at his thin shoes, and thinking of the miry roads, was fain to go to his coachman and send him on in advance.
