In its place it is sometimes proposed to substitute the desire for social esteem, or some other agreeable motive. But if the desire to possess goods is greed, then the desire for social esteem is vanity. As between greed and vanity there is little to choose. Besides, the appeal to the desire for goods does not, in the slightest degree, interfere with the appeal to the desire for social esteem. They are equally self-inter- ested. If we can appeal to both, we have a more powerful combination of m...otives than if we appeal to one alone.
There is thus the same reason for appealing to both forms of self-interest, in order to induce strenuous production, that we f oimd in favor of appealing to both self-interest and altruism.
But is rivahy of any kind desirable ? Is it in harmony with our ethical principles ? In the first place it is inevi- table if we have a population dominated by self-interest, or what was more acciurately called self-centered appreciation in Chapter III. If there is any degree of preference for self as compared with others, for one's family as compared with other families, for'one's neighbors as compared with other Digitized by VjOOQIC ECONOMIC COMPETITION iii neighbors, then the individual having such preferences will strive more zealously for his own interest than for others, for the interest of his family than for other families, for the interest of his neighbor than for other neighbors.
