Prior to that time I took a great interest in the subject, par...tly from the beauty of the phenomena, and partly because they seemed to baffle all efforts to unravel them.
From that day to this the subject has engrossed my attention, for I believed that a great deal could be done with these tubes, if only the right methods were devised.
At the time when Messrs. Gassiot, Warren De La Rue, Spottiswoode, Moulton and others were at work, their attempts to get at the bottom of the phenomena were conducted by means of high E. M. F. And large currents. In fact, the very methods which they pursued confused the results, though interesting and instructive, and the procedure they adopted can only be compared to the fable of the " Frog and the Bull.
