We have run into problems with the teaching materials that presently exist. We have attended many conferences. The most recent one was held by Mr. Law's group. Where the curriculum does not tell the true story about the various ethnic groups and their contribution to society, we are looking at that very closely and bringing in people to work with us in terms of transforming that curriculum.
This is going to take time because, as you know, we only get $25 per child per year for textbooks from th...e State, supplemented by a smaller amount for libraries. So it will take time to make that turnover. But with what we develop, along with other supplemen- tary materials that we're identifying, we hope that within 3 years we can have textbooks and materials in the school which reflect the makeup of our New York public school system.
We are going to address not only the three R's but the impor- tance of people as we teach the three R's. And we feel that because of the infusion of this curriculum, the students' self-esteem and self-worth will be raised and, therefore, increasing their achieve- ment levels.
