While in many versions the hero boards with his friends and family, Manu boards the vessel with seven relatively obscure people — the seven Ŗsis.1 The Ŗsis stem from the early period of Hinduism known as the Vedic period (it is believed that the Vedas were developing during this time, hence the name).
