After laying aside his school books he entered the employ of Hunter, Murray & Cleveland, in 1877, the latter named part- ner being his eldest brother, Merritt A. Cleveland, who had some years before formed a partnership for conducting contracting business upon a gigantic scale, principally the construction of canals and railroads.
