There was, at first, no entrance to the galleries eastward ; but it appears that there was at the end of each gallery a room, communicating with it by a door. It was known as the " Library Room ;" and was so called, because certain books were kept there, which had been sent over, from time to time, by Bishops of London and by the Society for the Promotion of Religion and Learning, as gifts to the parish of Trinity Church. When the Revolu tionary troubles began, other books belonging to King s (now Columbia) College, were taken to St. Paul s for safe-keeping and placed in the " Library Room, " and subsequently, for the greater security of its contents, the room was stoned up, so that access to it by the door was cut off.
