In 1542 there were one hundred monks at Melrose, who received annually for their consumption sixty bolls of wheat, and three hundred casks of ale. Probably there were also as many lay brethren as monks. For the service of the mass they received eighteen casks of wine, and for the entertainment of strangers thirty bolls of wheat, forty casks of ale, and twenty casks of wine. For the nourishment of the sick, they were allowed four thou- sand livres Tournois; and the barber, who was also surgeon t...o the community, received a salary of a hun- dred livres. * About 1560-67, the Borders were infested with armed banditti, who committed the most lawless de- predations, and whom success had made insolent and intolerable. James Stuart, prior of St. Andrews (after- wards the good Regent Moray), was appointed by Queen Mary at this period to be Lord- Lieutenant and Chief Justiciary of the Borders. The military retainers, from no less than eleven counties, were commanded to attend him, and he destroyed many of the strongholds of the freebooters, and executed twenty of the most * Scotia Sacra MS.
