For the few of us who had survived the Hürtgen, it was as delicious and unbelievable as a release from a long prison sentence. As the convoy headed out mine was the dubious honor, of riding in the open jeep of the commanding officer of F Company. Still below half strength with its seventy-six souls, of whom sixty-six were new recruits the final day of the Hürtgen, F Company limped away from the scene of one of the nastiest battlefields of World War II. According to Army records, our heaviest losses in Europe occurred there.
The convoy covered over one hundred miles, passing through many villages and small towns and then Luxembourg City itself.
