The formation of wise hypotheses is the most impor- tant step in the progress of science. It is simply suspecting the lines of nature's uniformity from slight hints. The fundamental preparation for it is intimate familiarity with the general system of things, so far as discovered. Helmholtz has well stated the case in the following passages. It will be observed that instead of "foreknowledge" it would have been better to use a more general word.
