Capital, Basseterre, with 12, 000 inhabitants. Sometimes called the "Mother of the British West Indies, " as it was the first of the Lesser Antilles settled by the Eng...lish — in 1623. At one time the headquarters of buccaneers whose settle- ment was destroj'ed and the pirates driven away by combined attack of French, English and Spanish in 1630. Captured by French in 1782, but ceded to England again in 1783. Discovered by Columbus in 1493, and named in honor of his patron saint — not of himself, as often stated. Chief products, sugar, molasses and rum. Climate pleasant and very healthy.
