To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

It was a custom in those early days to call tradesmen to settle, much as ministers were called, and we pre- sume he may have been so called to Hampton. It was also customary to make grants of land to encour- asfe settlement. He had a o-rant of one acre from the town, which in 1717 he deeded to his son Joshua. It has been said that he had a grant of ten acres on condition that he built on it, but of this there is no record in evidence, and it is probably an error. He lived to be over 90 years ol...d, and died 14 Feb. 1749 at the home of his son Joshua, and was buried in yonder acre by the side of his wife, who at 85 years of age died before him, 6 June 1745. Their graves were marked by stones on which were rudely carved the initials of their names only. But these are suffi- cient to identify the gi'aves beyond a doubt. For many years only the grave of William Lane was known by the rudely carved "W. L. , " but there was MEMORIAL ADDRESS. 23 a space between this grave and that of his son, Dea.
