But life may not only be contrasted with death and the grave, but with the life to come the life of heavenly light and purity and joy : and then it becomes appropriately "the night, " being a time of comparative darkness, both as to knowledge, and holiness, and happiness. These are the three things signified by light ; and their opposites, ignorance, impurity, and misery by dark- ness. It shall be a day of perfect light, of light without an obscuring cloud, and of which the Sun shall never go down. Of that eternal day the dawn was at hand; and they are exhorted to live a life consistent with their high and holy and blessed anticipations. Believers are already saved from the darkness of their native ignorance and pollution : and on this ground they are admon- ished to beware of courses inconsistent with their present spiritual character : " For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord : walk as children of light : (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;) proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.
