Wills, other requests soon came to him for autograph copies. The number he made, and for what friends, cannot now be confidently stated, though it was probably half a dozen or more, all written by him with painstaking care to correspond word for word with his revision.

At this period of the war unusual efforts were being made to collect funds for the use of the Sanitary Commission in send- ing su...pplies and relief in various forms to sick and wounded soldiers in army hospitals and camps in the south. During that au- tumn the President had given the original manuscript of his final Emancipation Proc- lamation to a fair held at Chicago for this object, at the close of which the manuscript was sold at auction for the handsome sum of three thousand dollars. The managers of other fairs naturally wished to take similar ^advantage of his personal popularity. Thus Mr. Everett wrote him under date of Janu- ary 30, 1864: I shall have the honor of forwarding to you by express, to-day or on Monday next, a copy of the authorized edition of my Gettysburg address and of the remarks made by yourself, and the other matters connected with the ceremonial of the dedication of the Cemetery.
