THE modern lay brotherhood of the churches is a movement indicated of God. It has come in response to the longing of men to render larger and more efficient service in the cause of Christ. The broth- erhood of olden times was remedial; that of to-day is preventive. One was after the fact; the other is before the fact. One emphasized rescue ; the other emphasizes prevention. One dealt with results; the other deals with causes. One was concerned about the unit; the other concerns itself with that and the aggregate. One treated as the summum honum the life to come; the other lays stress upon the establish- ing and maintaining here of right relations with God and man in order to a realization of the life of the blessed in eternity.
