Has not the time come in conservation when we should soberly go about the teaching ot its principles in an organized, systematic manner through the machinery that has been set up in this country tor the educating ot its people, the public school system of America? Much has been said about the importance ot education in conser- vation. Much has been done, particu- larly through the press with special emphasis on the conservation maga- zines. Some work has been done in the schools, but to my mind... here lies our greatest opportunity — an opportu- nity that should not be dealt with in a haphazard manner. It is readily con- ceded that the education of the Ameri- can youth would be the greatest influ- ence that could be had tor conserva- tion, and yet there seems to be no com- prehensive plan of accomplishing this end. I submit to you that no more forward step could be taken for con- servation ot the wild life ot America than to adopt textbooks and make it compulsory that conservation ot our outdoors be taught in the public schools throughout the nation "Conservation textbooks adaptable for use in the elementary grades ot our schools have not yet been evolved.
