These undertakings may be divided into six principal classes : Waterworks.

It may be stated that with the exception of markets, most of which were founded originally under charters, only 46 of these enterprises were commenced before 1850. But some of the waterworks owned by municipalities date from very early times Southampton from the year 1420, Hull from 1447, Bath from 1500, Plymouth from 1590, Rye from 1600, and Oxford from 1694.
