Mr. Mahoney. Yes. They are both black.
Mr. Hastings. Have you had an opportunity to examine the 1986 GAO report on NIH affirmative action?
Mr. Mahoney. Yes, I have.
Mr. Hastings. In light of the fact you did, what GAO recommen- dations, if any, did NIH implement that you know of?
Mr. Mahoney. Mr. Chairman, I can't speak specifically about the recommendations with regard to improving the affirmative action program.
I do think, though, from my knowledge in working very closely with Mrs. Armstrong
... that the affirmative action program has im- proved. And, to my knowledge, it is now in compliance with EEOC regulations. The major criticism of the past report was that NIH was not in compliance.
Mr. Hastings. I will leave it at that. But I would urge that you hear our second panel in light of the fact that I am certain that 39 they are likely to present more specifics and/or concrete examples that may very well shed some additional light.
With that, we thank all of you so very much this morning.
