Siskiyou Mountain is a grade of about 18 miles on each side of the Siskiyou Mountain Range, and is about 174 feet to the mile. Shasta Mountain is a grade of 9 miles and about 116 feet to the mile. Trains that do not exceed 35 cars and a tonnage of about 1,000 to 1,400 tons are handled, and must not exceed a speed of 15 miles per hour. The general practice is to control trains entirely by air brakes.
The Sierra Nevada Mountain grade is over 70 miles in length and ranges from 90 to 130 feet per mile. Trains are limited to 35 cars.
No train can exceed an average of 40 tons per brake. Speed is lim- ited to 10 miles per hour for slow and 15 miles per hour for fast freight.
