i io OUT OF MY LIFE Most of them were bitterly hostile to the govern- ment, not on the ground of its foreign policy, which promised a great future, national unity and the hegemony of the Balkans, but on account of do- mestic issues around which the contest went on the more fiercely. No methods, however danger- ous, were despised. Neither their allies nor their own army was sacred. It was a dangerous game ! The Dobrudja was always a favorite subject for party agita...tion. The government had conjured up menacing specters in order to put pressure on Turkey and ourselves, and now found they could not get rid of these specters which threat- ened to destroy everything, and for party pur- poses preached hatred of the allies and their representatives. In the autumn of 1917 it seemed to us best, for the time being, to give way on this Dobrudja question and leave its final solution until after the war. On our part it was a retreat in- spired by policy, not by conviction.
