Any object left to the action of these waters speedily gets covered : I once saw a mouse literally cof- fined in stone; and specimens of ti-tree branches and berries, &c. , thus acted upon are very common. At the foot of the Tarata we entered a bit of ti-tree scrub where Indian tile wasthe order of the day; to right and left were sometimes mere hollows in the ground with thin wreaths of steam floating out of them, sometimes villainous looking little mud volcanoes, from one foot to three in height, each furnished with a perfect crater and emitting a sulphurretted hydrogen which would have delighted a lecturer on chemis- try.
