The Indian, brutal from want of civilization, abandoned from possess ing no sense of honour, and sunk in apathy from the torpid state in which he has been left, might yet be reclaimed from his vices by wise policy and schooling, of which ex perience has always taught us they have been most susceptible ; but to place in his hands authority, possessed as he is of the secrets of Europeans, even were it practicable, or he disposed to assert it, would be a project, more perniciously visionary, than ever entered the brain of religious fanaticism, or revolutionary fervour.
