Belonging to the U. S. S. Marmora; was sent on shore wit...h a crew to man a rifle howitzer which had been mounted on a field carriage and posted in the streets of Yazoo City during the rebel attack on that place, March 5, 1864. His defense of the gun against superior forces is mentioned as most gallant, having nobly stood his ground through the whole action, fighting hand to hand to save the gun and the reputation of the navy. Promoted to acting master's mate.

Water tender, serving on board the U. S. S. Bennington, for extra- ordinary heroism displayed at the time of the explosion of a boiler of that vessel at San Diego, CaL, July 21, 1905.
