The way in which stronger and more vicious characters arrive at this enmity is different. Humiliation degrades, and degradation produces anger ; you have but to go into the narrow and crowded streets of the most degraded por- tions of our metropolis, and there you will see the outcast turning with a look of defiance and hatred on respectability, merely because it is respectable : and this, brethren, many of us have seen, some of us have felt, in our relation towards Gk)d.
