He was exceedingly merciful — so merciful as a boy that when he saw eight hungry wolves pass the sheep he was tending, he give them eight of his wethers to eat. When he saw his aunt coming, the holy boy was afraid, and prayed, saying "Lord, help me. " And the Lord, we are told, heard his prayerand sent eight we thers to the sheep, so that all was put right. At another time, when he had grown up, he heard some wolves crying (he seems to have been exceedingly fond of wolves), and he gave them a c...alf, and they ate it up. In the morning the cook came to look for the calf but found it not, and the saint said to him, " Don't look after it, I gave it to some hungry wolves while you were asleep. " The cook was naturally concerned at this benevolent act, and enquired, " How shall we quiet the cows?" " Let me bless your head, " said Aedh, and he blessed the COOk's head, and said further 1 1 1 t, "Go and show the cows your head. " The COWS licked the cook's head and were appeased, and after- wards had other calves.
