The earl en- treated Wallace to remain with him in all time LIFE OF SIR WILLIAM WALLACE. 107 coming, and assist him in upholding that heroic spirit of freedom that burned so ardently in his breast and the breasts of his devoted clansmen ; but, however deeply he sympathised with them in this respect, it was impossible for him to con- fine his efforts within so narrow limits, and after encouraging all parties to persevere in a work to which he and his followers had devoted their lives, he leaves this part of the country and pro- ceeds towards the north.
