Bather would he test every thing previous by the contents of this last communication. The illustration will mislead if it is understood to imply that... the books of the Bible are to be literally described as letters from ' Grod to man. The point is simply that the progres- sive nature of revelation renders it necessary, as it is natural, to use the New Testament as the touch- stone of the relative completeness and the continued validity of all prior biblical teaching. It requires to be further said, that, from this gradually develop- ing nature of revelation, devotional expressions, current proverbs, and the varied expressions of a 98 THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION.
