Furthermore, when Arch- duke Francis Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Habsburgs, was assassinated at Serajevo, on the 28th of June, 1914, Sazonoff doubtless knew of the war- like arrangements the Archduke had concluded in his castle at Krobatin with the German Emperor, — yet as far as I could judge from my conversation with 157 THE GAME OF DIPLOMACY members of his entourage, Tie was convinced that if the Archduke were out of the way the peace of Europe would not be endangered.
