To quickly assess the difficulty of the text, read a short excerpt:

" 12 178 THE GOOD OLD TIMES The old regulations of Christ's Hospital declared its intention to be for the maintenance and education of dependent children, but the rules were imperfectly carried out. In 1809 it was decreed " that no children of livery servants (except they be freemen of the City of London) and no children who have any adequate means of being educated and maintained, and no children who are lamed, crooked, or deformed, or suffering from any infectious or incurable disease should ...be admitted. " As to the clothing of Christ's scholars, everybody is familiar with the yellow-legged blue-coat boy. Leigh Hunt was a " blue, " and thus pleasantly writes of his alma mater : "Our dress was of the coarsest and quaintest kind, but was respected out of doors, and is so. It consisted of a blue drugget gown, or body, with ample skirts to it ; a yellow vest underneath, in winter-time ; small-clothes of Russia duck ; worsted yellow stockings; a leathern girdle ; and a little black worsted cap, usually carried in the hand.
